No. 13 Amherst Tallies Five Goals in Third Period, Powers Past Assumption, 10-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Seven different Purple & White skaters found the back of the net as the No. 12 Amherst College men's ice hockey team powered past Assumption College, 10-1 Saturday evening at Buffone Arena.

With the win, Amherst extends its win streak to eight games and improves to 11-3-1 on the season, while Assumption falls to 7-12-1 overall. Amherst returns to action, Friday, Jan. 27 when they host Little III rival Wesleyan University beginning at 7 p.m. 

Starting out strong, Amherst needed just 4:47 to claim a 1-0 lead. Netting his second goal of the year, Jack Fitzgerald '19 gave the Purple & White the early advantage, collecting a pass from Mark Esposito '20 and ripping a shot into the nylon.

Senior captain Chris Roll doubled Amherst's lead to 2-0 five minutes later, beating Nick Commesso at the 11:49 mark to record his third goal of the season. Phil Johansson '19 and Will Vosejpka '18 were credited with the assists on the play.

Continuing their dominance on the power play this winter, Roll tallied his second goal of the game with 5:33 remaining in the opening period. Taking advantage of a Greyhound holding penalty, Tyler Granara '18 dished a pass to Roll who buried a shot attempt to make it a 3-0 contest. 

Amherst tallied two goals in the opening two minutes of the second stanza to extend the Purple & White's lead to 5-0.

Striking 17 seconds after intermission, David White '18 notched his sixth goal of the season, while John Festa '19 converted on Purple & White's third power play opportunity of the tilt at the 1:24 mark to register what proved to be Amherst's final goal of the period. 

Greyhound Sam Kelly found the back of the net to score Assumption's lone goal of the outing with 9:27 on the clock to make it a 5-1 game. The score marked Kelly's first of the season, while Nick Fenuccio was credited with the assist.

Tallying goals on five of their 14 shots in the third stanza, Amherst notched five unanswered scores to double their lead before the final horn, securing a 10-1 victory.

Festa registered two more scores in the final 20 minutes of play, at the 3:15 and 10:10 marks, respectively, to capture his first collegiate hat trick, while Patrick Daly '20, Stanley Brenner '19 and Joey Lupo '20 combined to record Amherst's final three goals of the contest.

GAME NOTES

  • Three different Greyhound goalkeepers saw time in between the pipes, with Nick Commesso (3-6-0) recording 15 saves and earning the loss in the matchup, while Giancarlo Ventre '20 (2-0-0) made 28 stops for Amherst in the winning effort.
  • The Purple & White owned a dominative 50-29 edge in shot differential, including a 13-5 advantage in the second period.
  • Amherst finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while Assumption went 0-for-4 up a skater.
