AMHERST, Mass. – Battling back from a 2-0 deficit, the Purple & White tallied six unanswered goals, including four in the second period, as the Amherst College men's ice hockey team defeated league foe Bowdoin College, 7-3 Friday evening at Orr Rink.
Getting on the board 4:25 into the opening period, Polar Bear Chris Wallace tallied his third goal of the season to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead. Taking advantage of a power play opportunity following an Amherst holding penalty, Wallace collected a pass from Daniel McMullan to the right of the net and one-timed a shot short side.
Sebastian Foster doubled Bowdoin's lead to 2-0 less than 30 seconds later, as he corralled Matthew Lison's rebound and ripped a shot through the legs of the Amherst netminder at the 4:43 mark.
Up a skater, P.J. Conlon '20 cut the Amherst deficit to 2-1 with 12:36 on the clock. Dishing a pass across the zone, senior captain Chris Roll connected with Conlon on the back door who slid a shot past Peter Cronin's pad far side.
Netting the Purple & White's second power play goal of the first stanza, Noah Gilreath '20 knotted the score at 2-2 four minutes later. Blasting a slap shot from the point through traffic at the 11:38 mark, Gilreath beat the Bowdoin goalkeeper low right side.
Outshooting the Polar Bears 13-4 in the second period, Amherst notched four unanswered goals to close out 40 minutes of play with a 6-2 lead.
Amherst claimed their first lead of the game 4:13 into the second stanza, as Gilreath recorded his second goal of the matchup on the power play. Powering a shot towards net from the blue line, Gilreath's attempt deflected off a Bowdoin defender and trickled over the goal line to give the Purple & White a 3-2 edge.
Extending the Purple & White's lead to 4-2 with 10:32 on the clock, Max Roche '19 registered his first goal of the season. Gathering the loose puck near the right faceoff dot, Steven Mallory '19 sent a hard pass to Roche in the slot who deflected the puck into the nylon.
Continuing Amherst's dominance in the offensive zone, Thomas Lindstrom '18 extended his point streak to three games as he found the back of the net at the 10:57 mark to give the Purple & White a three goal advantage.
Striking once again three minutes later, Lindstrom made it a 6-2 contest at the 13:35 mark, as he tipped a shot from Patrick Daly '20 into the netting.
Both sides tallied scores in the final period of play, with Mitch Barrington rifling a wrist shot from the slot top shelf over the shoulder of the Amherst keeper 5:35 into the third to make it a 6-3 game.
Junior Will Vosejpka tallied the game's final goal with three minutes remaining, one-timing a pass from Conlon to help Amherst secure the 7-3 victory.
- In goal, Adam Ellison (3-0-0) made 20 stops for the Purple & White, while Peter Cronin (2-5-0) recorded 22 saves in the losing effort.
- Amherst owned a 29-23 edge in shot differential, including a 13-4 advantage in the second period.
- Each side converted on the power play with Amherst finishing 4-for-5 and Bowdoin going 1-for-4 up a skater.
