Strong Second Period Lifts Men's Ice Hockey Past No. 10/13 Babson, 4-1

AMHERST, Mass. – Following a scoreless first period, the Purple & White erupted for three goals in the second stanza as the Amherst College men's ice hockey team downed No. 10/13 Babson College, 4-1 Sunday evening at Orr Rink.

With the win, Amherst improves to 3-0-1 on the season, while Babson falls to 7-2-1 overall. Amherst returns to action on Friday, Dec. 2 when they travel to Little III rival Wesleyan University for a 7 p.m. conference tilt.

Coming out of the intermission strong, Amherst claimed a 1-0 lead 56 seconds into the second period. Winning a 50-50 battle for the puck in the right corner, P.J. Conlon '20 dished a pass to Phil Johansson '19 in the high slot. Cutting across the ice, Johansson ripped a quick turnaround shot on goal, beating the Babson netminder low right side.

The Purple & White doubled their lead less than two minutes later as Thomas Lindstrom '18 notched a power play goal at the 2:26 mark. Up a player after a roughing call against Beaver Josh Beck, Lindstrom tallied what proved to be the game-winner, tipping P.J. Conlon's '20 shot over the right pad of Matt Pompa.

Down a skater, Amherst continued to hold momentum with senior Austin Ho logging his first goal of the season to make it a 3-0 contest with 10:20 to play in the second stanza. Collecting a loose puck at the top of the left circle, Ho toe-dragged around a Babson defender before deking to his forehand and sliding a snap shot in between the legs of the Beaver goalie.

Battling back, Matt Brazel made it a 3-1 game 2:27 into the final period following a wrist shot by Josh Beck at the left point. Sending his attempt into traffic, the shot was blocked by the Amherst defense, but Brazel picked up the puck in the slot and sent a shot on the ice just out of the reach of Connor Girard '18.

Playing without a goalie for a five of the final 13 minutes of the game in a bid to decrease their deficit to one, Amherst capitalized on the strategy with 2:36 remaining in regulation as Will Vosejpka '18 ripped a shot from the left circle in Amherst's defensive end the length of the ice and into the empty net.
