Jeffs Net Two in the Second, Stave Off Late Rally to Best Colby, 2-1

WATERVILLE, Maine – A pair of goals in the second period, including the game-winner from Conor Brown '16, helped the No. 11/9 Amherst College men's hockey team secure a 2-1 victory over Colby College in Friday evening's NESCAC contest in Waterville, Maine.

With the win, Amherst improves to 14-3-2 on the season, 10-3-0 in NESCAC play, while Colby moves to 5-12-2 overall, 2-9-2 in league action.

After a scoreless first period that saw Amherst stake a 9-3 advantage in shots, the Jeffs continued to apply pressure in the second stanza as first-year forward David White found the back of the net for his team-leading 12th goal of the 2014-15 campaign. Topher Flanagan '16 assisted on the goal at the 9:19 mark that gave the Purple & White a 1-0 advantage.

White and Flanagan were involved in Amherst's second goal less than four minutes later as Brown potted his eight goal of the season at the 13:14 mark to give the Jeffs a 2-0 lead.

Entering the third period with the Purple & White 0-for-1 on the power play and the Mules 0-for-3 on the man advantage, Robert McCormick registered his third marker of the season as Colby finally capitalized with the extra skater following a Jeffs' penalty. Jack Burton was credited with the assist at the 5:46 mark of the third frame to set the score at 2-1.

The Mules, who outshot Amherst, 13-10 in the second stanza, also held a 7-3 edge in shots in the third session, but Jeffs' senior goalie Danny Vitale was equal to the task as he finished with 22 saves (13 in the second period) to pace the Purple & White to its fifth straight win, and eighth in the last nine games.

Vitale improved to 7-2-2 on the season, while Sam Parker (3-4-0) suffered the loss for the Mules following a 20-save effort.

Amherst returns to NESCAC action on Saturday, February 7 when it travels to Bowdoin College for a 4 p.m. tilt.
