White Nets Hat Trick, Jeffs Down Wesleyan, 6-2

AMHERST, Mass. – First-year forward David White scored his first collegiate hat trick to help spark the No. 13/12 Amherst College men's hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Wesleyan University in Saturday afternoon's NESCAC contest at Orr Rink.

With the win, Amherst has now won four straight and improves to 13-3-2 on the season, 9-3-0 in NESCAC action. Wesleyan has now lost 12 in a row and moves to 2-16-0 overall, 1-11-0 in league play.

The opening period saw Wesleyan narrowly outshoot Amherst, 12-10, but a short-handed goal by White gave the Purple & White a 1-0 lead at the 15:56 mark of the frame. Senior co-captain Jake Turrin provided on White's team-leading ninth goal of the season. Quincy Oujevolk fired four shots on frame for the Cardinals in the opening 20 minutes of the contest, but Amherst goalie Danny Vitale '15 was equal to task, stopping all 12 of Wesleyan's offerings.

In the second stanza, Amherst added to its lead when Topher Flanagan '16 scored 3:48 into the period following a beautiful dish from White to give the Jeffs a 2-0 lead. Turrin was credited with the second assist on the goal. Wesleyan answered at the 15:42 mark when Jay Matthews scored to make it 2-1. Cam McCusker and Alex Carlacci assisted on the goal. With just 10 seconds remaining in the session, White delivered his second goal of the game when Mike Cashman '15 won a faceoff in the offensive zone and then quickly found White with a pin-point pass. White then cashed in with his 10th goal of the season to give the Purple & White a 3-1 lead at the second intermission. Both teams fired 14 shots on target in the second period giving the Cardinals a 26-24 edge through 40 minutes of action.

In the third frame, Thomas Lindstrom '18 collected his third marker of the season at the 8:10 mark following feeds from Brendan Burke '16 and senior co-captain Mike Rowbotham to lift the cushion to 4-1. A goal by Wesleyan's Dylan Holze made it 4-2 just 1:47 later as Jordan Jancze added the assist on the goal. At the 12:11 mark, Rowbotham passed the puck to Cashman, who passed it to White, who finished with his third goal of the game and team-leading 11th of the season to run the lead back to three at 5-2. Lindstrom capped the scoring with his second goal of the period and fourth of the year to make it 6-2 at the 13:39 mark. Patrick Mooney '18 and Rowbotham assisted on the score.
    
Amherst outshot Wesleyan, 35-33 in the contest, led by White who finished with eight shots on goal Kevin Ryder '16 added six shots on target, while Austin Ho '17 and Lindstrom added five each in the winning effort.

Vitale was stellar in 53:39 between the pipes, making 30 saves to improve to 6-2-2 on the season. Nolan Daley (0-5-0) made 27 stops in 53:39 of action for the Cardinals. Adam Ellison '17 played the final 6:21 for the Jeffs and made one save, while Daniel Weiss made two saves in the final 6:21.

Amherst returns to action on Friday, Feb. 6 for the first of four road games when it travels to Colby College. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
