Jeffs Edge St. Michael’s, 6-4

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Conor Brown '16 scored a pair of goals including the game-winner, and added an assist, as the Amherst College men's hockey team picked up a 6-4 non-league victory at St. Michael's College on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, Amherst extends its winning streak to two games and improves to 3-1-0 on the season, while St. Michael's moves to 3-3-1 overall with the loss.

Amherst scored twice in each period and was 3-for-5 on the power play. Danny Vitale '15 made his first start of the season in goal for the Jeffs and 21 saves, including 10 in the second stanza, to improve to 1-0-0 on the season. Dave Donzanti (3-2-1) turned away 35 of the 41 shots on target that he faced for St. Michael's in the losing effort.

Following a hooking call issued to David White '18 early in the first period, the Purple Knights took advantage of the extra man and scored the game's first goal at the 7:11 mark through Stephen Inman. Eric Robinson assisted on the play.

Amherst answered seven minutes later after Kevin Altidor was sent to the box for elbowing. Mike Rowbotham netted his first goal of the season on assists from Jake Turrin '15 and Keenan Hodgson '18 to even the game at 1-1. Three minutes later, Hodgson scored a goal of his own to give the Jeffs a 2-1 edge. Xavier Louis Reed '16 and Theo Hannah '16 provided assists on the play at the 17:08 mark.

St. Michael's wasted little time knotting the game at 2-2 in the second when William Cote scored following an AJ Pieprzak assist at the 1:10 mark. A slashing call put the Purple & White on the man-advantage again and Dan Merenich '15 netted his third goal of the season with 5:43 elapsed in the period. First-year Thomas Lindstrom and Brendan Burke '16 tallied the assists.

At the 9:09 mark of the second frame, Connor Mitchell and Shawn Morrow set up Justin McKenzie who notched his first marker of the campaign to even the game at 3-3. Amherst regained its advantage with its third power play goal of the contest when Hodgson found Brown for the first of his two scores with 15:06 played in the period.

The Purple Knights fired their final salvo when Eric Salzillo scored 1:48 into the third period, tying the game at 4-4. Brown answered with an unassisted goal at the 5:42 mark to give the Jeffs a 5-4 lead. Andrew Fenwick '15 scored with 12:35 to play in the game to increase the cushion to two goals and set the final score at 6-4. Sophomore Austin Ho provided the assist on Fenwick's first goal of the season.

Amherst returns to non-conference play on Saturday, Nov. 29 when it hosts Elmira at Orr Rink. Puck drop in the Jeffs' home opener is slated for 3 p.m.
