Spotlight on Robinson, Coach Hixon as Regional Hoops Awards Announced

AMHERST, Mass. – As the 2018-19 basketball season nears its completion, the regional awards for both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and were announced this week.

Amherst College sophomore guard Grant Robinson was named First Team All-Northeast Region from the NABC and Second Team All-Northeast Region from

Head Coach Dave Hixon was named the Northeast Region Coach of the Year by the NABC. 

Robinson was a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) First Team selection, averaging 15.6 points per game. He led the NESCAC with 43 total steals and was 7th with 88 total assists. Robinson shot 45.7% from the floor and 83.3% from the free-throw line. 

The native of McLean, Virginia scored 20+ points in seven different games this year, including a career-high 32 points in Amherst's 74-69 NESCAC semifinals win over Williams, sharing NESCAC Player of the Week honors with teammate Joe Schneider '19 for his effort. He averaged 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds over Amherst's opening weekend in the NCAA tournament as the Mammoths beat Rosemont and Rochester to advance to the Sweet 16. 

Hixon, the 2019 NESCAC Coach of the Year, is the NABC Northeast Region Coach of the Year for the fourth time. He was national Coach of the Year in 2007 & 2013, when he led the Mammoths to the Division III national championship.

Hixon led the Mammoths to a 25-5 record, their record eighth NESCAC championship and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen. The Mammoths were the #1 team in New England in the NCAA regional rankings, and were #7 in the country by final regular season poll.

Under Hixon's watch, Amherst led the nation in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 37.3% from the floor, and were #2 in three-point field goal percentage defense (28.3%). The Mammoths were the tenth best scoring defense in the country and had the fourth best rebounding margin, beating their opponents on the boards by eleven rebounds per game.

After passing the 800-win plateau last year, Hixon set another milestone this season when he won his 812th game, passing Bill Thurston (baseball) for the most wins at Amherst with a single team. With the team's 25 wins this year, Hixon's all-time record improves to 826-293, a winning percentage of .738.

Robinson joins three other players from the NESCAC to be named to the NABC All-District teams. Kena Gilmour of Hamilton was named Northeast Player of the Year, while Bobby Casey of Williams was also a First Team selection. Wesleyan was represented on the Second Team by Austin Hutcherson.

From, Gilmour was selected to the First Team, while Casey and Hutcherson joined Robinson on the Second Team. Jack Farrell of Middlebury was picked for the Third Team and James Heskett of  Williams was a Fourth Team honoree.

The NABC recognizes the best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes and coaches in the division, selected by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division III.   

Players chosen to the All-Region team are eligible for All-American selection. The men's All-American team will be announced at the end of this week, in conjunction with the Division III men's championships, and the women's All-America team will be announced at the Division III women's championships.
