MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Connor Green '16 registered a game-high 26 points to help lead the Amherst College men's basketball team to its fifth consecutive win Saturday afternoon with a 76-59 victory over Little Three and NESCAC rival Wesleyan University.
With the win, the Jeffs improve to 17-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while the Cardinals fall to 14-8 and 3-5 in the NESCAC.
Joining Green in double-digits was Jayde Dawson '18 with a career-high 16 points, while sophomore Jeff Racy added 12. Green registered a double-double as he pulled in a game-high 11 rebounds as well. Both Green and Racy connected on four three-pointers as Amherst hit 12 on the day. Reid Berman dished out a game-high five assists.
Wesleyan had seven treys, three by junior BJ Davis, who paced the Cardinals in scoring with 16. Joseph Kuo and Davis both had seven boards.
In the first half, the Jeffs broke away from a 10-10 tie after 5:45 of action, scoring nine straight for a 19-10 margin. After gaining a 30-19 lead, Amherst was outscored 11-2 over the final 5:05 of the period as Wesleyan narrowed the gap to 32-30 at halftime. Junior Joe Edmonds had five of the 11 points and sophomore Harry Rafferty had four.
Edmonds netted the opening bucket of the second half on a second-chance opportunity, but it was the last time the game was even. Green hit a trey with 18:12 left in regulation for a 35-32 Amherst lead before Wesleyan closed to 35-34 on a pair of free throws from Kuo. Amherst followed with eight straight points, initiated by another Green three-pointer, for a 43-34 edge.
From that point on, Wesleyan got no closer than six points, that coming at 56-50 with 7:40 to go. The Jeffs then scored 14 of the next 17 points for an insurmountable 70-53 margin with only 4:23 remaining. The largest margin of the game came in the final minutes, 76-55.
Amherst now leads the series against Wesleyan 124-74 in their 198 meetings, and has captured 11 of the last 12 and 26 of the most recent 28 outings.
The Jeffs return to the court Thursday, Feb. 12 for a make-up game at home against Lasell. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
