Jeffs Lose On Late Three-pointer to Williams, 71-70

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – A three-pointer by Ryan Kilcullen with four seconds remaining in the game lifted the Williams College men's basketball team to a 71-70 win over No. 18 Amherst College Saturday afternoon in NESCAC play.

With the loss, the Jeffs drop to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Ephs improved to 10-4 on the year and 1-1 in the conference.

Johnny McCarthy '18 recorded a double-double for Amherst with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also recorded three steals. A day after scoring a career-high 29 points, David George '17 notched a team-high 18 on 7-of-10 shooting, while grabbing eight boards. Connor Green '16 and Jeff Racy '17 each scored 16 and combined for eight three-pointers. Green went 3-for-6 from downtown with seven rebounds and Racy finished 5-of-9 from behind-the-arc and grabbed six boards. Reid Berman '17 dished out a team-high four assists.

The Ephs were led by Daniel Wohl with a game-high 28 points. He went 9-of-18 from the floor, 3-of-8 from three-point range and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, while also grabbing nine rebounds. Kilcullen added 12 points and Darrias Sime scored 11. Mike Greenman dished out a game-high six assists and recorded five boards.

Green put the visitor's on the board first with a three-pointer at the 18:29 mark. Cole Teal evened the score roughly a minute later with a trey of his own, but Green put the Jeffs back up by three on their next possession. Just seconds later, Wohl hit one from behind-the-arc and Cole made another one the next time down the court as Williams took a 9-6 lead with 16:08 to play in the first half.

Green hit another three-pointer two minutes later to knot the game at 11-11. He was a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown in the first 5:54 of Saturday's NESCAC showdown. The game went back-and-forth for much of the half until a lay-up by Wohl with 8:34 to play sparked a 10-1 Williams run as they pulled ahead by 29-21. They eventually entered the locker room with a 36-30 lead.

The Ephs maintained a lead for the first 5:43 of play in the second half until a three-point play by George put Amherst ahead, 46-44. Neither team could pull away until the Jeffs completed back-to-back three-point plays for a 6-0 run as they went up by eight with 5:35 to play in regulation.

Williams slowly cut into the lead and a three-pointer by Wohl with 1:08 remaining put the home team within one, 67-66. McCarthy responded on the Jeffs next possession with a trey to go ahead by four, but after a lay-up by Wohl seconds later and a missed free throw by the Jeffs, Kilcullen claimed the win with a three-pointer in the closing seconds as the Ephs came from behind to edge Amherst.

The Jeffs went 26-of-66 (39.4%) from the floor, 10-of-26 (38.5%) from downtown, and 8-of-16 (50.0%) from the charity stripe. Williams shot 25-of-58 (43.1%) from the floor, 8-of-27 (29.6%) from behind-the-arc and 13-of-16 (81.2%) from the line. Amherst held a 44-34 rebounding edge.

The Purple & White return to action Tuesday, Jan. 13 and will host Little Three rival Wesleyan. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
