DANVILLE, VA - Sophomore forward Pat Fitzsimons (Durham, NC) led five Jeffs in double-figures with a game-high 19 points and 15 rebounds as the Amherst men's basketball team steamrolled Averett College 94-80 Tuesday night in Danville, VA, improving to 6-1 on the season.
Fitzsimons' dominating performance overshadowed sophomore forward Steve Zieja's (Hadley, MA) fourth double-double of the season (15 points, 11 rebounds), marking the first time in seven games Zieja failed to lead the Jeffs in rebounding.
Amherst led 46-38 at the half despite shooting just 1-for-9 from the three-point arc, overcoming its long-range ineptitude by outrebounding the Cougars 28-14 on the offensive end and 54-35 overall.
First-year guard Adam Harper (Washington, DC), senior guard Brian Daoust (Dover, MA) and sophomore guard Ryan Faulkner (Lebanon, NH) added 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively, to round out five Jeffs in double-figures. Faulkner also had a game-high five assists and four rebounds.
Amherst returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 6, against visiting Western New England College at 2 p.m.
