WELLESLEY, MA - Sophomore forward Stephen Zieja (Hadley, MA) led Amherst College in scoring and rebounding for the third time in four games with a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds on Thursday, as the visiting Jeffs upended non-league foe Babson College 65-61 to improve to 3-1 on the season.
It was Zieja's second double-double and the fourth time he's led the Jeffs in rebounding this season. Senior guard Brian Daoust (Dover, MA), who was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday as the conferenceÕs leading scorer, added 14 points and a game-high five assists despite shooting just 2-for-9 from three-point land.
Amherst led 37-32 at the half and persevered through a see-saw 20 minutes after the break. Babson cut the lead to 63-61 with 10 seconds remaining but was forced to foul, when junior forward Christian Keane (Oradell, NJ) iced the game with a pair of clutch free throws to set the final score at 65-61.
Brian McCarthy paced Babson with a game-high 20 points and six rebounds, as the Beavers fell to 3-4 with the loss. Jared Clough added 13 rebounds and 10 points in defeat.
Amherst returns to action this Saturday, hosting Westfield State at 7 p.m.
