Eight-Run Second Inning Helps Mammoths Claim Series Win

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst baseball scored in the first inning for the third straight game and then added eight runs in the second en route to a 16-4 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory over Williams, earning a 2-1 series win over the Ephs on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field.

The Mammoths (11-6, 4-1 NESCAC) have now won the last eight straight series against Williams and are 16-3 against the Ephs in the last 19 games.

Amherst pounded 13 hits and took advantage of seven Williams errors. Max Steinhorn '18, Ariel Kenney '18 and William Murphy '20 scored three times apiece, while Harry Roberson drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double in the second.

That hit was part of three straight doubles during the second inning, including two-baggers by Nick Nardone '19 and Kenney. Rob Casey '20 had an RBI single as well, one of eight Mammoths to drive in runs on the day.

For the Ephs, third baseman Eric Pappas went 2-4 with a pair of RBIs, while shortstop Kellen Hatheway was 2-3 and scored twice for Williams, who plated two runs on Pappas single down the right field line in the third.

Amherst added two more runs in the sixth on RBI hits by Severino Simeone '20 and Murphy. They tacked on two more runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Doug Schaffer added an RBI single for Williams in the sixth, and pinch-hitter David Kwan plated Hatheway with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Sam Schneider '18 earned the victory for Amherst, throwing six innings and allowing just two earned runs with five strikeouts and no walks. Ryan Sholtis '21 and David Brinkley '19 were effective in relief.

Charlie Carpenter took the loss for Williams (3-12, 2-3 NESCAC), allowing five earned runs in one inning of work.

Amherst steps out of conference play for a single game on April 11th at Elms, starting at 7:00 PM.
