Mammoths Sweep Tri-Match to Open Season 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Amherst College defeated Western New England 3-0 and then came from a set down to beat Emerson 3-1, improving to 3-0 on their young season with two victories at a tri-match on Saturday afternoon at AHLC Gym.

Amherst looks to run their winning streak to four games next Friday night with a 6:00 PM game in Worcester at Clark University.

 

Game 1: Amherst 3, Western New England 0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-10)

Emily Kolsky '20 led all players with 17 kills and made just one error on 30 swings, good for a .533 hitting percentage.

Sophie Launsbach '22 added nine kills and was in on six blocks, while senior Charlotte Duran put up 31 assists and had nine digs and two block assists of her own.

The Golden Bears (2-4) were paced by 12 kills and 11 digs from Ashley Matthews and 24 assists from Caitlyn Sibiskie, who also recorded 7 of WNE's 44 digs.

Amherst had 54 total digs, led by 13 from Pearl Acord '21 and 12 from Skyleur Savage '22.

 

Game 2: Amherst 3, Emerson 1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23)

After dropping their first set of the season, Amherst came back to edge the Lions by three straight scores of 25-23.

Duran continued her strong career against Emerson, recording 53 assists after posting 55 assists against the Lions last season.  

Jamie Dailey '21 pounded a kill to clinch the second set and tie the match at one, while Kolsky delivered the decisive point in the third game.

With a chance to put away the Lions, Amherst led 20-15, only to see Emerson tie the fourth set at 21 on a kill by Logan Steenbergen.

The Mammoths used kills by Dailey and Cam Hendricks '20 to take a 24-21 advantage, then ended the match on another kill by Dailey, her 14th of the game.

That number led four different Mammoths who were in double-digits in kills, including 13 from Launsbach, 12 from Kolsky and 10 from Hendricks.

Savage racked up 20 digs, with Sierra Cox '22 and Candace Chung '20 adding nine digs apiece.
