WATERVILLE, MAINE -- Amherst College earned a 3-0 sweep over Colby College on Saturday afternoon to wrap up their 2018 regular season with 20 wins and claim the #3 seed in the upcoming New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's volleyball tournament.
The Mammoths (20-4) enter the NESCAC tournament on a five-game winning streak and have won 20 games in a season for the first time since 2015.
First year Sophie Launsbach had eight kills on eleven attempts with no errors for a .727 hitting percentage, and also added 2.5 blocks and a service ace. Emily Kolsky '20 also went errorless with eight kills and led the team with eleven digs.
After a close 25-22 win in the opening set, Amherst (8-2 NESCAC) overpowered the Mules (7-15, 1-9 NESCAC) by scores of 25-15 and 25-11. The Mammoths hit over .360 in the first and third set and just under .300 in the middle frame.
The Mules were led by the 12 kills of Paige Hanssen, eleven digs out of Erin Maidman and nine kills and five digs from Elizabeth Middlebrook. At the setter position, Molly Manuel put up 27 assists.
Amherst will face Williams, the number six seed, next Friday night at 8:00 PM in Brunswick, Maine. As the #1 seed, Bowdoin College will host the entirety of the NESCAC women's volleyball tournament, which includes semifinals games on Saturday, November 3rd and the conference championship on Sunday, November 4th.
