Amherst Improves to 18-4 After Win at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Emily Kolsky and sophomore Jamie Dailey each had 15 kills, leading Amherst College to a 3-1 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening. 

The Mammoths (18-4) won 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 25-11, and now will try to compile a 20-win regular season when they travel to Bates and Colby this weekend to close out NESCAC play.

Junior Charlotte Duran led Amherst with 42 assists, while senior Hayes Honea had team-high nine digs in the win. 

Junior Angelou Dunton, sophomore Bridget Boyle and freshman Amanda Dake each had 12 kills to lead the Bears. Sophomore Veronica Hine had a match-high 15 digs while Dake added 11. Junior Makenna Martin led the Bears with 42 assists to go with seven digs. Junior Alex Kempf had a match-high five blocks for Coast Guard.

In the opener, Amherst had an early 8-2 lead. The Bears would run off four straight and seven of nine points to make the score 16-15. The Mammoths responded by scoring five of the next six for a 20-16 lead. Coast Guard would again close the gap to one at 23-22 with four straight points before back-to-back errors gave Amherst a 25-22 win.

The Bears jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second, before Amherst pulled even at 10-10. Coast Guard held a slight 15-14 lead and scored seven of the next eight for a 22-15 advantage and won 25-20.

The third set was tied 16-16 before Amherst scored five straight and never looked back, winning 25-22. 

Amherst would use a 9-1 run in the fourth set to take control turning a 9-7 lead into an 18-8 edge en route to the 25-11 win.

The Bears (17-11) close out the regular season on Saturday at home against Wheaton at 1:00.
