Unblemished First Set Sends Amherst to Opening Win

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Amherst College played their first set of 2018 with no attacking errors, opening up a 7-0 lead on their way to a 3-0 (25-4, 25-18, 25-19) win over Smith College in non-conference women's volleyball action.

Sophomore Jamie Dailey served three aces, had ten digs and put down 15 kills in her first action for Amherst (1-0), hitting .414 for the match, just points above the team's attack percetage.

Emily Kolsky '20 added eight kills and Claire Dennis '20 had five, with neither player making an error.

The Purple and White went ahead 17-2 in the first set on serving runs by Dailey and Candace Chung '20, breezing to the opening set win.

Chung led the team defensively with 17 digs. Charlotte Duran '20 had 31 assists , five of them to first year Sophie Launsbach.

In the second set, a 5-0 run by the Mammoths, including three kills from Dailey, turned an 18-15 lead into a more comfortable margin, and a kill by Dennis sealed the set.

The Mammoths took an 8-2 lead and then withstood a 6-1 run by the Pioneers (0-5) early in the game and another 8-2 run once they had led 21-10.

Caleigh Johnson led Smith with eight kills, while Kimani Freeman had ten assist and three digs. 

Amherst is right back on the court tomorrow morning as they play a pair of matches at the Western New England Invitational. The Mammoths will play the host Golden Bears at 11:00 AM and then face off against Emerson at 1:00 PM.
