No. 5 Volleyball Falls to Top-Seeded Tufts, 3-0 in NESCAC Semis

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Mammoths stayed within striking distance in all three sets, however top-seeded Tufts University stayed strong to secure the 3-0 win over the No. 5 seed Amherst College volleyball team Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym.

With the setback, Amherst falls to 17-10 on the year, while Tufts improves to 22-5 overall and advances to the NESCAC Finals.

SET 1: Tufts 25, Amherst 22
The Mammoths opened the contest strong, jumping out to an 11-7 lead before three consecutive Tufts points moved the score to 12-10. The sides then traded runs, as the score was tied as late as the 19-19 mark following a kill by Emily Kolsky '20, however  the Jumbos finished the stanza with a 6-3 edge to capture the victory.

SET 2: Tufts 25, Amherst 21
The second stanza opened similar to the first, with a Marialexa Natsis '18 kill putting the visitors ahead 7-3 early. Tufts responded in the middle of the stanza, knotting the score at 14-14 and 16-16 before rattling off four points to take a 20-16 lead. A Claire Dennis '20 kill brought the Mammoths within three, however Heather Holz closed out the set with a kill of her own to direct Tufts to the win, 25-21.

SET 3: Tufts 25, Amherst 15
Tufts took control early in what stood as the final set, powering to 14-7 lead. Two Cameron Hendricks '20 moved the score to 16-10, however the top-seed capped off the day on an 8-4 run to earn the 3-0 sweep.

MATCH NOTES

  • Daria Kim-Percy '21 led the Mammoths with 8 kills, while Natsis chipped in seven kills.
  • Charlotte Duran '20 was just one off a contest-high mark with 20 assists, while Hayes Honea '19 notched 13 digs.
  • Christina Nwankpa had 11 kills to lead the Jumbos, while Angela Yu and Rachel Furash had 21 and 17 assists, respectively. Kelly Klimo led the tilt in digs with 21.
