AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) sweep of Trinity College in Friday evening's NESCAC contest at LeFrak Gymnasium.
With the win, Amherst improves to 15-8 overall, 6-3 in league action. The Purple & White close out their regular season slate Saturday, Oct. 29 when they host Little III rival Wesleyan University at 12 p.m. at LeFrak Gymnasium. Trinity moves to 10-12 on the season, 1-8 in conference play. The Bantams travel to Williams College tomorrow for a 2 p.m. match in their regular season finale.
Trailing 11-6 early in the first set, Amherst exploded for 10 unanswered points as Nicole Gould '17 floored a kill that sparked the Purple & White's impressive rally. Maggie Danner '17 notched a trio of kills during the run, while Lauren Reppert '19 added two. Annika Reczek '18 added a kill and an assisted block during the stretch to help the hosts post a 16-11 lead. Maintaining its five-point lead (21-16), Amherst scored four of the next five points bookended by a kill from Danner and a kill from Marialexa Natsis '18 to give the Purple & White a 25-17 victory in the opening frame and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
A back-and-forth second set saw Amherst clinch another 25-17 win after playing to three tie scores and a pair of lead changes. Asha Walker '18 served up both of her aces during the stanza to help the Purple & White stake a 2-0 lead in the contest.
The third set saw five more tie scores and the sides exchanged the lead four times before Amherst was able to run its lead to as many as five (21-16 following a kill by Gould. The Bantams used a kill by Wyllie Boughton and a service ace by Colette Scheffers to help narrow the gap to two at 21-19 before a Trinity service error, followed by kills from Gould and Charlotte Duran '20 set the score at 24-19. Another Boughton kill made it 24-20, but Gould capped the match with her eighth kill of the contest to set the final score at 25-20 and preserve the sweep for the Purple & White.
- Danner finished with a match-high 10 kills and added a pair of solo blocks, while Gould followed with eight kills. Natsis and Emily Kolsky '20 chipped in six kills each in the winning effort.
- Duran and Adelaide Shunk '20 directed the attack with 18 and 15 assists respectively, while Hayes Honea '19 notched a match-best 23 digs. Kelci Keeno '17 was also stellar in the back row with nine digs.
- Scheffers led Trinity with seven kills, three aces and nine digs, while Boughton, Rachel Underwood, and Carter Stancil notched five kills each.
- Randi Whitham handed out 22 assists and collected 10 digs, while Grace Metry and Underwood finished with a team-high 14 digs apiece. Shelby Deck and Boughton added eight digs each in the loss.
