Jeffs Sweep by Colby, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass. – Katie Warshaw '16 notched a team-high 14 digs, and Nicole Gould '17 registered a team-best nine kills as the Amherst College women's volleyball team secured a 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-20) sweep of Colby College in Saturday afternoon's NESCAC match at LeFrak Gymnasium.

With the win, Amherst improves to 20-6 overall, 8-2 in NESCAC action and secured the third seed in the upcoming conference postseason tournament. The Jeffs will take on No. 6 Connecticut College at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, and all NESCAC tournament matches will be played at Tufts University. 

Colby concludes its season 13-12 overall, 2-8 in league action.

In the opening set, Amherst sprinted out to an 11-4 lead following a service ace from Kate Bres '17, and extended that lead to as many as 10 (22-12) following a kill by Maggie Danner '17. Back-to-back attacking errors by both teams set the score at 23-13 before Samantha Newby '16 smashed a kill, and Colby was forced into another error as the Jeffs claimed the first set, 25-13.

In the second set, Amherst again secured a sizeable advantage (23-13) before Karoline Serhan floored a kill. Lizzi Ahern '16 answered with a kill of her own to set the score at 24-14, before Serhan registered another kill to make it 24-15. A kill by Danner gave the Purple & White a 25-15 win in set two and a 2-0 lead in the match. 

Trailing 23-16 in the third stanza, the Mules rallied for four straight points. Serhan notched a solo block, and joined Alexa Busser and Kate Wincek with a pair of assisted blocks to highlight the stretch. Sarah Arvidson added a service ace to help pull Colby within three at 23-20, but back-to-back kills from Gould sealed the sweep for Amherst. 

Gould led the Jeffs with nine kills, while Newby, Ahern and Marialexa Natsis '18 added five each. Danner tabbed six kills and Asha Walker '18 collected four in a balanced attack for the Purple & White. 

Warshaw led the team with 14 digs, while Ahern totaled eight. Nicole Carter '16 finished with a match-high 16 assists and Bres added 11 helpers, while Walker floored four service aces. Lauren Antion '15 chipped in three assisted blocks and five digs. 

Serhan led all hitters with 10 kills, Natalie Roy led all players with 16 digs, and Emily Moslener handed out 15 assists in the losing effort for Colby. Arvidson and Kim Donaldson added five kills each, while Arvidson contributed eight digs.
