NEW LONDON, Conn. – Trailing 2-0 in the match, the Amherst College women's volleyball team notched a tremendous three set rally to claim a 3-2 (25-27, 21-25, 28-26, 25-18, 15-12) victory over Connecticut College in Friday evening's NESCAC volleyball match at Luce Field House.
With the win, Amherst improves to 15-4 overall, 6-1 in league action, while Conn. College moves to 10-8 on the season, 4-3 in NESCAC play.
The victory is the seventh in a row for the Jeffs, and the first five-set victory for the Purple & White in three matches so far this season.
After falling behind 2-0 in the match, Amherst won the ensuing three sets, 28-26, 25-18 and 15-12 to complete a sensational comeback.
Maggie Danner '17 led all hitters with 19 kills, followed by Marialexa Natsis '18 with 10 and Nicole Gould '17 with nine. Nicole Carter '16 directed the rally with 36 assists, while Kate Bres '17 added 14 helpers.
Kelci Keeno '17 and Katie Warshaw '16 collected 13 digs each, and Asha Walker '18 chipped in 10 digs. The Jeffs also registered a combined 12 blocks, including six assisted blocks from Natsis, five assisted blocks from Danner, and four assisted blocks by first-year Jennifer Mackinnon Krems.
Emily Aterbury dished out a match-high 50 assists for Conn. College, while Sam Hunter and Ella Johnson led the Camels in kills with 18 and 15 respectively. Caroline Martin led three players who finished in double figures in digs with 20. Cailyn Straubel and Chloe Ainley tallied 13 and 10 digs respectively.
Hunter added three service aces in the losing effort, while Alex McDevitt and Martin chipped in nine and eight kills respectively.
Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 when it travels Tufts University for tri-match action. The Jeffs and Jumbos will square off at 1 p.m. The Purple & White then takes on Endicott College at 3 p.m. in non-league action.
