AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College volleyball team cruised to its third straight win with a 3-0 sweep over Hamilton College Saturday in LeFrak Gymnasium.
The Jeffs won by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-8 to improve to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in the NESCAC, as they handed the Continentals (10-5, 2-1 NESCAC) their first conference loss of the year.
Offensively, Amherst was led by sophomores Maggie Danner and Nicole Gould with 10 kills each. Nicole Carter '16 and Kate Bres '16 both dished out 14 assists, as Katie Warshaw '16 recorded a game-high 28 digs. Lauren Antion '15 and Samantha Newby '16 each recorded two blocks.
Hamilton's balanced attack featured six kills from Erin Casey, and four from three different players. Kyndal Burdin dished a team-high 14 assists and Anna Brown led the squad with 25 digs. As a team, the Continentals recorded 12 blocks (2 solo, 10 assists) as Margaret O'Brien recorded four (1 solo, 3 assists).
Tied at 6-6 early in the first set, an attack error by the visitor's gave Amherst the lead as they never looked back. Sparking a 7-3 run, the Jeffs went ahead 13-9 after a kill by Marialexa Natsis '18, which forced a Hamilton timeout. Consecutive errors by Amherst later in the set cut the deficit to one (17-16) but a timeout rejuvenated the Purple & White as they outscored Hamilton, 8-4, down the stretch for the 1-0 lead.
The Continentals went on a run in the second set and took a 14-9 lead following a Jeff error. However, after an error of their own reduced the margin to four, Amherst rallied off nine straight points to go ahead, 18-14. The Jeffs went on to take the second game, 25-20.
The third and final set was all Amherst as a Danner kill put the home team ahead, 8-2. The Jeffs led from the beginning with zero ties or lead changes throughout the set. Asha Walker '18 recorded a service ace before an attack error by Hamilton sealed the win for the Purple & White, 25-8.
Amherst is back in Wednesday, Oct. 8 for a non-conference match at Westfield State. The game is scheduled to start 7 p.m.
