HARTFORD, Conn. – Maggie Danner '17 and Nicole Gould '17 floored 11 kills each as the Amherst College women's volleyball team swept by Trinity College, 3-0 (25-18, 28-26, 25-12) in Friday evening's NESCAC opener for both teams at Oosting Gymnasium in Hartford, Conn.
With the win, Amherst improves to 7-2 overall, 1-0 in NESCAC action, while Trinity moves to 6-3 overall, 0-1 in league play.
The victory was the Jeffs' first victory in their conference opener since the 2011 season (3-1 over Wesleyan).
Gould hit a sizzling .529 downing 11 kills on 17 swings with just two errors helping the Purple & White stake a .333 hitting percentage as a team. Nicole Carter '16 dished out 13 assists and Lizzie Ahern '16 added seven helpers.
Kate Giddens led the offensive charge for Trinity with a match-high 12 kills, and Gina Buzzelli and Randi Whitham combined for 22 of the Bantams' 30 assists with 12 and 10 respectively. Hunter Drews, Giddens and Whitham chipped in nine, eight and seven digs in the losing effort.
After notching a 25-18 victory in the opening set, Trinity held a 26-25 edge in the second frame following a Drews kill before Amherst rallied for three straight points on the strength of kills by Ahern, Gould and Carter.
In the third stanza, the Jeffs raced out to 7-0 lead and didn't look back, claiming the frame by a score of 25-12.
Amherst returns to NESCAC action on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. when it travels to Wesleyan.
