PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Amherst College women's volleyball team earned a pair of 3-0 sweeps against Johnson & Wales University and the University of New England in day one action of the Johnson & Wales Invitational on Friday evening.
The Jeffs (4-2) return to Johnson & Wales Invitational action on Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Keene State. The consolation and championship matches are slated for 12 p.m.
Amherst 3, Johnson & Wales 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-13)
In the Jeffs' second match of the season against Johnson & Wales, Maggie Danner '17 led all players with 12 kills, setter Nicole Carter '16 dished out 20 assists, and libero Katie Warshaw '16 recorded match-best 14 digs in the winning effort.
Kate Bres '17 added 11 assists and six digs, Nicole Gould '17 chipped in five kills and eight digs, Lizzie Ahern '16 notched six kills, Marialexa Natsis '18 chipped in five kills and Kelci Keeno '17 added seven digs to help spur Amherst to victory.
Amherst 3, UNE 0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-16)
Against UNE, Natsis led the Purple & White with seven kills and two blocks. Bres dished out 10 assists and collected five digs and Warshaw added 17 digs.
Danner added six kills and two blocks, while Samantha Newby '16 chipped in five kills and a pair of solo blocks.
Amherst, which hit .294 as a team, used three service aces from Warshaw and Gould to help keep the Nor'Easters off balance. Ahern and Jennifer Mackinnon-Krems '18 contributed four kills each.
