PROVIDENCE, RI - The Amherst volleyball team improved to 4-3 on the season with a pair of wins to open the 2013 Johnson & Wales Invitational. The Jeffs opened Invitational play with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-13, 26-24, 25-10) victory over the University of New England before defeating Wheaton, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-15) in the nightcap.
Nicole Gould '17 led Amherst with 29 kills on the day, while Nicole Carter '16 dished out 51 assists. Katie Warshaw '16 helped anchor the Purple & White backline with 26 digs.
The Jeffs return to action on Saturday, Sept. 14 against host Johnson & Wales at 10 a.m. before squaring off with Keene State at 2 p.m.
Amherst 3, University of New England 1 (18-25, 25-13, 26-24, 25-10)
Dropping the first set to UNE 25-18, Amherst rallied for a decisive 25-13 in the second. Battling the Nor'Easters in a pivotal third frame, the Jeffs edged out a hard-fought 26-24 triumph. Looking to put UNE away, the Purple & White cruised to a 25-10 win in the fourth set to even their season slate at 3-3.
Gould paced the Jeff offense with 17 kills and a pair of aces, while also adding nine digs. Sophomore Samantha Newby and first-year Maggie Danner had seven and six kills, respectively, with Danner also collecting 15 digs, three aces and three blocks.
Directing the Amherst attack, Carter racked up 21 assists, while Warshaw had 17 digs. First-year libero/defensive specialist Kelci Keeno added 10 digs.
Amherst 3, Wheaton 0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-15)
With hopes of moving to 2-0 in tournament play, Amherst grinded out a 25-21 win in the first set of its match against Wheaton. Taking the second set in similarly close fashion (25-22), the Jeffs pulled away in the final frame, notching a 25-15 victory.
Carter turned in another solid effort, amassing a season-high 30 assists to go along with six digs, while Gould hammered home 12 kills and three service aces. Danner chipped in with nine kills, five digs and two aces, while Warshaw and Keeno combined for 14 digs.
