WATERVILLE, Maine - The Amherst volleyball team wrapped up this weekend's NESCAC play at Colby with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 12-25, 25-15) loss to Bowdoin and a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-11) sweep of Bates to move to 15-5 overall on the season and 4-4 in league play.
Unable to get things going offensively through the first two sets, Amherst found itself in a 2-0 deficit in its match-up with Bowdoin. Rallying for a .320 hitting percentage in the third, the Jeffs stayed alive with a 25-12 victory, but the Polar Bears limited Amherst to a paltry .064 attack rate in the fourth, sealing the match with a 25-15 triumph.
First-year Lauren Antion (Los Angeles, Calif.) paced the Jeffs with a team high 10 kills, while Cristy Meier '12 (San Anselmo, Calif.) and KC Kanoff '12 (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) had eight and six spikes, respectively. Callie Neilson '13 (Escondido, Calif.) dished out 23 assists in the loss.
Looking to rebound against Bates, the Lord Jeffs edged out a 25-23 first set victory before taking the second by a score of 25-16. Hoping to complete the sweep, Amherst registered a match-high .407 swing rate in the third en route to a commanding 25-11 triumph.
Kanoff and Meier helped lead the Jeffs offensively, tallying 11 kills apiece, while Antion added nine spikes. Keeno continued to stand out defensively, collecting 21 digs, while Neilson finished with 31 assists.
