SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, Calif.) hammered home a team-high 18 kills to lead the Amherst women's volleyball team to a 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 15-6) non-conference win over Skidmore at the Williamson Sports Center.
Winners of four-straight, Amherst improved to 9-2 overall with the win, while the Thoroughbreds fell to 9-4 on the year.
Surrendering a .316 hitting percentage, Amherst dropped the first set 25-18 before limiting Skidmore to a .103 attack rate en route to a hard-fought 25-23 victory in the second. After a 25-23 loss in the third set, Amherst registered 13 kills on just 25 attempts for a match-high .480 swing rate in a 25-14 fourth set win before hitting .471 to take the tiebreak 15-6.
KC Kanoff '12 (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) hit .412 with 14 kills and 15 digs, while Abigail Hunter '13 (Kentfield, Calif.) and Lauren Antion '15 (Los Angeles, Calif.) combined for 13 kills and 17 blocks. Callie Neilson '13 (Escondido, Calif.) dished out 45 assists in the win, adding four blocks, while Kristin Keeno '13 (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Devin Pence '14 (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 20 and 13 digs, respectively.
Kelley Vershbow '12 paced the Thoroughbreds with a match-high 19 kills and 15 digs, while Olivia Glassman '15 and Corinne Palmer '14 added 13 spikes apiece. Mallory Mendelsohn '13 racked up 52 assists and 13 digs, while Sam Friedman '13 dug out a team-high 16 balls.
Amherst, which hit .248 while holding Skidmore to a .155 attack percentage, controlled the net with a decisive 32-8 edge in blocks.
The Lord Jeffs return to action on Friday, Sept. 30 at Middlebury.
