With the win, Amherst improved to 5-1 on the year, while extending its win streak over the Cardinals to five, with the squad's last loss to their fellow Little Three rival coming in the 2008 season.MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Three Lord Jeffs finished with double-digit kills as the Amherst College women's volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23) win over Wesleyan in its NESCAC opener at Silloway Gymnasium in Middletown, Conn.
Hitting just .167 in the first set, the Lord Jeffs secured a 25-23 victory before taking a 2-0 match lead after winning the second by an identical margin. Despite tallying a match-best .320 attack rate, Amherst dropped the third set 25-20 before rebounding in the fourth for a 25-23 triumph.
Cristy Meier '12 (San Anselmo, Calif.) paced the Lord Jeff offense with 11 kills and three blocks, while Mary Reiser '12 (New York, N.Y.) and Lauren Antion '15 (Los Angeles, Calif.) each finished with 10 kills, hitting .333 and .350, respectively.
Callie Neilson '13 (Escondido, Calif.) dished out 41 assists while directing the Amherst offense, adding 10 digs. Kristin Keeno '13 (Honolulu, Hawaii) continued to impress, anchoring the Jeffs' defensive efforts with a match-high 17 digs.
Monica Leslie '14 led Wesleyan with 16 kills and hit .520 for the match, while Casey Reed '12 added 10 spikes and eight digs. Laura Volgenau '13 finished with 12 kills and six blocks, and Laura Yim '13 had 44 assists. Jeanne McPhee '13 collected 14 digs in the loss.
Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 against Trinity.
