Winners of five of their last six matches, Amherst improved to 16-5 overall on the season with the victory.Led by senior Cristy Meier's (San Anselmo, Calif.) team-high 16 kills, the Amherst women's volleyball team opened play at the 2011 Hall of Fame Invitational with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-12, 25-14, 27-25) win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Smith College's Scott Gym.
Managing just a .138 hitting percentage in a 25-20 first set loss, the Lord Jeff offense rebounded in the second, recording a .333 attack rate en route to a decisive 25-12 victory. Amherst's hitters continued to enjoy success in the third set, registering 12 kills and three errors on 24 swings (.375) in a 25-14 win. Despite hitting just .142 in the fourth, the Jeffs secured a hard-fought 27-25 triumph to close out the match.
KC Kanoff '12 (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) had 10 kills and 13 digs in the win, while first-year Lauren Antion (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Abigail Hunter (Kentfield, Calif.) combined for 17 spikes and four blocks. Callie Neilson '13 (Escondido, Calif.) dished out 39 assists while directing the Amherst offense, with Kristin Keeno '13 (Honolulu, Hawaii) collecting a team-high 24 digs in defense.
The Lord Jeffs resume play at the Hall of Fame Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 22 against Brandeis and Wellesley.
