PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Amherst College volleyball team improved to 3-1 on the young season, closing out play at the Johnson & Wales Invitational with a pair of wins over Keene State College and Wheaton College.
The Lord Jeffs opened the day with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-20) victory over the Owls before sweeping the Lyons, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-20).
Senior outside hitter Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, Calif.) paced Amherst with a team-high 14 kills against Keene St., while first-year middle hitter Lauren Antion (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 11 kills, 13 digs and three blocks.
Senior co-captains KC Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Mary Reiser (New York, N.Y.) combined for 16 kills, while junior Kristin Keeno (Honolulu, Hawaii) collected a team-best 31 digs. Fellow junior Callie Neilson (Escondido, Calif.) dished out 35 assists while directing the Lord Jeff attack, adding 15 digs.
Hoping to keep the squad's momentum going, Reiser registered 12 kills in the Jeffs' tournament finale against the Lyons, while Antion tallied eight spikes. Meier and sophomore Meghan McCafferty (Tyngsboro, Mass.) each recorded seven kills, while Neilson racked up 31 helpers.
Keeno again anchored Amherst's defensive efforts, digging out 16 balls, while sophomore Devin Pence (Los Angeles, Calif.) and first-years Karina Kossler (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Kelsey Ayers (Los Altos, Calif.) combined for 22 digs.
The Lord Jeffs return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 against Emerson College.
