Amherst Cruises at Roger Williams; Everden Wins 500th Career Match

BRISTOL, RI – Amherst College head volleyball coach Sue Everden joined the elite 500-win club today, as the Lord Jeffs cruised to a trio of 3-0 victories at the Roger Williams Invitational to kick off the 2008 season. Everden is one of only 22 women's volleyball coaches in Division III history to reach the 500-win mark, and is the first NESCAC coach to reach the milestone.

Entering the 2008 season (the 23rd season of her career), Everden boasted an impressive 497-202 record with the Lord Jeffs as the 19th all-time winningest coach in terms of winning percentage (.711). In a 10-year span beginning in 1998, Everden's teams went a combined 248-66 (.790) and finished the season with eight or fewer losses nine times. Amherst has won at least 20 matches 16 times in Everden's tenure and at least 25 matches nine times. Her most successful season came just a year ago, when the Jeffs went 30-4 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal round for the first time in program history.

Amherst picked up right where it left off last season, defeating the University of New England (25-12, 25-17, 25-17), host Roger Williams (25-13, 25-17, 25-19) and Rivier College (25-21, 25-18, 25-18) in straight sets. Senior middle hitter Hannah Wirth (Pacific Palisades, CA) represented the Jeffs on the All-Tournament Team, while sophomore Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) was named the invitational's Most Valuable Player.

Sophomore Laura Hyman (Glencoe, IL) got Amherst going on the day by racking up 10 kills against New England, with first-years Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA) and Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) combining for another 10 kills. Yorke was solid from the get-go, picking up 21 digs against the Nor'easters.

Yorke and classmate Erin Camp (Santa Monica, CA) each had nine digs against Roger Williams, with Hyman and Kanoff chalking up another eight and seven kills, respectively. In the day's final match, Kanoff and Hyman each had five kills to go along with sophomore Jackie Berkley's (Fullerton, CA) five, Meier's four and Wirth's four. Sophomore setter Katherine Jordan (Los Altos Hills, CA) had 26 assists against Rivier.

Amherst is once again off to an impressive start and will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 10 to host Emerson College at 7 p.m. in the Lord Jeffs' home opener.
