WELLESLEY, MA - The Amherst College volleyball team improved to 5-0 on the season this evening with a non-conference victory over Middlebury College in the Lord Jeffs' first match of the 2008 Wellesley Quad. The Jeffs rolled to a 3-0 victory, and are yet to drop a single set in 2008.
Amherst rolled over their NESCAC rivals from Vermont, picking up a quick three-set win in almost repeat fashion. The Jeffs topped the Panthers 25-16, 25-17 and 25-16 to start the weekend on the right foot.
The Jeffs were led offensively by a pair of outside hitters, including one senior quad-captain, and one first-year student-athlete. Senior Hannah Wirth (Pacific Palisades, CA) and first-year Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) each pounded home 10 kills, while chipping in three blocks apiece.
Sophomore sensation Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) led the defensive effort once again, picking up 20 digs in the three short sets. Yorke continues to impress all fans after being named the Tournament MVP at the season's first Invitation.
Senior quad-captain Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) was stellar as the playmaker this evening, dishing out 26 assists as she continues to build chemistry with her new teammates.
First-year Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA) also played well, as she kept the ball alive en route to 12 digs, while also grabbing a pair of service aces.
The Jeffs will take the rest of the evening off, before returning to the court at Wellesley's Keohane Sports Center to face Wellesley and ECSU tomorrow.
