MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Amherst College volleyball team wrapped up its 2008 regular season with a 3-1 loss at the hands of Little Three rival Wesleyan University. The Lord Jeffs, who will enter the postseason with a 20-7 overall record and 8-2 mark in conference play, have earned the No. 3 seed in the NESCAC Championship to take on No. 6 Conn. College in the first round, which is set to begin Friday, Nov. 7.
The Jeffs won the first set, 25-21, but dropped three straight to the Cardinals, 17-25, 19-25 and 20-25. First-year Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) once again paced the Amherst attack with 12 kills, while classmate Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA) added nine kills and 11 digs, and senior quad-captain Hannah Wirth (Pacific Palisades, CA) had six kills.
Leading Amherst in digs were sophomores Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) with 17 and Erin Camp (Encino, CA) with 12, as well as junior Bethany Belisle (Austin, TX), who had nine. Senior quad-captain Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) dished out 33 assists on the day.
Amherst and Wesleyan (20-6) finish the regular season with identical 8-2 records in the NESCAC, with the tie-breaker and the No. 2 seed going to the Cardinals after Saturday's result.
