From a Wesleyan University release
MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst College volleyball team traveled to the campus of Wesleyan University this weekend sitting in second place in the current NESCAC standings, where they would face fourth-place Conn College this evening, before battling third-place Wesleyan tomorrow. The Lord Jeffs kicked off the final weekend of regular season play with a 3-1 win against the Camels to improve to 20-6 overall, and 8-1 in the NESCAC.
With just tomorrow's match against Wesleyan standing between the Lord Jeffs and the start of the 2008 NESCAC Championship Tournament, Amherst sits prime to make another run to the NESCAC Championship match. Last season, Amherst finished the regular season atop the conference table, and served as the host for the three-day, eight-team tournament. The Jeffs ultimately fell to Williams 3-2 in the 2007 title match, before heading to the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid.
This evening, Amherst was led offensively by first-years Christy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) and Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA) who finished the evening with 13 and 6 kills, respectively, while Kanoff had 10 digs.
Senior quad-captain Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) dished out 32 assists, while sophomores Erin Camp (Santa Monica, CA) and Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) paced the defense. Classmate Laura Hyman (Glencoe, IL) also played well, crushing home 9 kills.
Amherst will return to action tomorrow afternoon for a 12 p.m. match against the host-Cardinals.
