Amherst Picks Up Clean Sweep at Bates

LEWISTON, ME – The Amherst College volleyball team defeated NESCAC rival Colby College Friday evening on the campus of Bates College, 3-0, before earning 3-0 victories over Bates and Bowdoin on Saturday to finish off the weekend's clean sweep. The Lord Jeffs move to 9-1 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

After making quick work of Colby (25-11, 25-15, 25-13), Amherst kicked off Saturday's action by squeaking out a 25-22 victory over Bates in the match's first set. The Jeffs settled down and cruised to take the next two sets by convincing margins, 25-10 and 25-13. In the weekend's final match, Amherst earned a 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 win. 

Senior quad-captain Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) had 30 assists in Friday night's victory before adding another 26 against Bowdoin, while sophomore Katherine Jordan (Los Altos Hills, CA) took over the setting duties in the match against Bates and had 23 assists. 

First-years Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) and Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA) were dominant for the Jeffs throughout the weekend. After picking up nine kills and three blocks on Friday, Meier led Amherst with 12 kills and another three blocks against Bates, capping things off with 10 kills and three more blocks against Bowdoin. Kanoff chalked up 27 kills in the three matches, with her best match coming against Bowdoin when she had 14 kills, 12 digs and four service aces. 

Junior Bethany Belisle (Austin, TX) accumulated 22 digs in a solid defensive effort on the weekend, with 10 of those digs coming against Bates on Saturday. Sophomores Erin Camp (Santa Monica, CA) and Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) also shined on defense, with Camp adding eight digs against Colby and another 11 in the win over Bates, while Yorke had 11 against each Colby and Bates. 

The Lord Jeffs return to action Friday, Sept. 26 when they kick off the Amherst Invitational at 6 p.m. with a match against Brandeis University.
