MIDDLETOWN, CT– The Amherst College volleyball team chalked up another pair of wins at the Wesleyan University Invitational, but suffered its first loss of the 2007 season Friday night. The host Cardinals defeated the Lord Jeffs in a close match, 3-2, but Amherst rebounded to defeat Trinity College and SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday, 3-0 each. Wesleyan (12-2) won all three of its matches, while Trinity (10-5) went 1-2 and Old Westbury (7-11) finished at 0-3.
In Friday's back-and-forth battle, Amherst took games two (30-25) and three (30-20), but could not put the Cardinals away. The hosts stormed back for a 30-20 game-four victory, and scored seven consecutive points in the deciding game en route to a 15-9 win.
Amherst opened its Saturday slate with a clean sweep of Trinity, winning by scores of 30-27, 30-20 and 30-26. The Jeffs followed up with another impressive 3-0 victory, defeating Old Westbury 30-14, 30-14 and 30-12. Leading Amherst over the weekend was senior tri-captain Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ), who combined for 36 kills and 11 blocks in the Jeffs' first two matches.
Senior tri-captain Whitney Kouvaris (Jacksonville, FL) racked up eight kills against Wesleyan and another 13 against Old Westbury, while fellow tri-captain Julie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) had 42 digs and 11 service aces in total. Chalking up the assists once again was junior Sara Heller (La Canada, CA), who had 45 and 29, respectively, in the first two matches, before first-year Katherine Jordan (Los Altos Hills, CA) came in to pick up 24 assists against Old Westbury. Also playing well was first-year Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA), who had 21 digs against Wesleyan and another 12 in match three.
Berkley and DeMais were each named to the All-Tournament Team. The Lord Jeffs (13-1/2-0 NESCAC) return to action Thursday, Oct. 4 for a 7 p.m. home match against Smith College.
