MEDFORD, MA - The Amherst College volleyball team got key contributions from several players as they scored a 3-0 victory in a NESCAC match against Tufts University on Saturday afternoon. Amherst improved to 15-1 overall and 3-0 in the league, while Tufts dropped to 8-10 overall and
1-2 in NESCAC.
Tufts had leads in all three games, but couldn't hold them. Amherst went on to win by shutout with game scores of 30-25, 30-24 and 30-21.
Offensively for the winners, senior tri-captains Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) and Whitney Kouvaris (Jacksonville, FL) each had nine kills. Junior setter Sara Heller (LaCanada, CA) averaged 11 assists per game and senior tri-captain Julie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) had two service aces. On defense, first-year Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) was superb with 20 digs in three games. Six-foot junior Hannah Wirth (Pacific Palisades, CA) finished with six blocks.
A young Tufts team continues to have growing pains. Senior captain Katie Wysham (Spokane, WA) led the way on Saturday with 11 kills and four blocks. First-year Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) finished with 10 kills and two aces. Junior Natalie Goldstein (Piedmont, CA) was the digs leader as usual with 21 and junior Kate Denniston (Tarzana, CA) added four block assists. Classmate Kaitlin O'Reilly (Manhattan Beach, CA) finished with 10 digs.
Both teams are in action tomorrow. Tufts takes on Middlebury at home with a 2:00 start and Amherst is at Bowdoin beginning at noon.
