Jeffs Fall to Tufts, Blank Western Connecticut State, Aurora

AMHERST, MA - After suffering its first conference loss of the season on Saturday, falling to visiting Tufts University 22-30, 20-30, 30-22, 30-28, 17-15, the Amherst College volleyball team rebounded to defeat visiting non-conference foes Western Connecticut State University, 30-11, 30-25, 30-11, and Aurora University, 30-23, 30-15, 30-28, on Sunday. Amherst senior co-captain Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) piled up 108 assists over the weekend as the Jeffs improved to 19-3 overall and fell to 6-1 in conference play.

Hoeksma dished out nearly half of her 108 assists on Saturday, dealing 48 in the loss and adding eight kills as well. Reigning NESCAC Player of the Week sophomore Kristin Quinn (Los Angeles, CA) led the Amherst attack with 16 kills and eight blocks, while senior co-captain Nikki Davidson (Los Angeles, CA) had 12 kills and junior Kate Raddock (Stamford, CT) and first-year Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) each posted 11 kills. First-year Julie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) stood out defensively, tallying 18 digs, while Raddock added 14 digs, sophomore Mikela Yarawamai (Kamuela, HI) had 12 digs and Davidson posted 11 digs.

DeMais led the way on Sunday, racking up 14 kills against Western Conn. and 13 kills and six digs against Aurora. Quinn chipped in 11 kills in each match, and added four blocks and an ace against Aurora, while Davidson posted seven kills and five digs and sophomore Laura Golden (Boca Raton, FL) and Berkley contributed 13 and eight digs, respectively, in the win over Aurora as well.

The Jeffs return to action Friday and Saturday as they and Smith College host the Hall of Fame Invitational.
