WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The third-seeded Amherst College volleyball team blanked No. 6 seed Bates College 30-22, 35-33, 30-18 on Friday night in the opening round of the NESCAC Championship Tournament, hosted by Williams College. Rookie outside hitter Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) paced the Jeff attack with 12 kills, while junior Kate Raddock (Stamford, CT) posted 21 digs to lead the defense.
Amherst senior co-captain Nikki Davidson (Los Angeles, CA) had 10 kills and eight digs, while sophomore Kristin Quinn (Los Angeles, CA) and junior Sara Bruggeman (Boulder, CO) each tallied eight kills. Fellow co-captain Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) dished out 33 assists and added 12 digs, and sophomore Mikela Yarawamai (Kamuela, HI) chipped in 11 digs. Bates senior Olivia Zurek led the Bobcats with 16 kills and six digs.
With the win, Amherst advances to face second-seeded Tufts University, which defeated No. 7 seed Bowdoin in the opening round 30-14, 30-19, 30-17, with a berth in the NESCAC Championship match at stake. Top-seeded host Williams has already advanced to the championship with a 30-15, 30-14, 30-16 victory over eighth-seeded Wesleyan in the opening round and a 30-16, 30-14, 30-22 win over No. 4 seed Middlebury in the tournament semifinals.
