SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Amherst College volleyball team opened its season with four consecutive victories at the Western New England College (WNEC) Invitational last Friday and Saturday. Sophomore Kristin Quinn (Los Angeles, CA) led the way with a combined 57 kills and 19 digs, earning tournament MVP honors and leading the Jeffs to the tournament crown for the second straight year. Senior co-captain Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) complied 133 assists and earned All-Tournament recognition as well.
The Jeffs opened the tournament with a 30-24, 30-12, 30-16 sweep of Framingham State College. Quinn racked up 17 kills and five blocks, while junior Sara Bruggeman (Boulder, CO) had 12 kills and first-year Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) tallied 11 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Amherst blanked Westfield State College and host WNEC in similar fashion, 30-17, 30-12, 30-17 and 30-13, 30-21, 30-14, respectively. The Jeffs advanced to face previously undefeated Plymouth State University in the championship match and dealt the Panthers their first loss of the season in five games, 30-21, 25-30, 30-28, 28-30, 15-10. Quinn and DeMais paced Amherst with 15 and 10 kills, respectively, while Hoeksma dished out 39 assists and first-year Julie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) tallied 17 digs.
The Jeffs return to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. at non-conference foe Keene State College.
