Everden Wins 400th as Jeffs Fall to Gordon, Blank Middlebury, at Amherst Classic

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College head coach Sue Everden posted her 400th career victory but had to wait until her second match of the afternoon to do so, as the Jeffs fell to Gordon and downed Middlebury at the Amherst College Volleyball Classic on Saturday. Everden's club moved to 10-1 with the split, while Gordon won the tournament and remained undefeated at 15-0 after a 3-0 win over M.I.T. in the championship match.

Amherst's loss to Gordon was a hotly-anticipated matchup between two team with unblemished records. The Jeffs came away with the short end of the stick, however, falling to the Scots 3-0 (30-15, 30-27, 32-30), despite a 10-kill, 13-dig performance by first-year outside hitter Natalie Soud (Jacksonville, FL). Senior co-captain Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) added nine kills for the Jeffs, while sophomore setter Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) finished with 26 assists and 11 digs. Lauren Barnes and Sara-Britt Johnson paced Gordon with 20 kills and 46 assists, respectively.

Amherst rebounded later in the afternoon to steamroll NESCAC rival Middlebury, 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-14). The Jeffs placed a trio of players in double figures in kills with Dittus racking up 11 and first-year Sara Bruggeman (Boulder, CO) and Dittus each finishing with 10. Hoeksma set the table with 35 assists, and junior Lauren Wong (San Francisco, CA) paced the defense with eight blocks.

Amherst will take a well-deserved 13-day hiatus, returning to action on Friday, October 11, for a NESCAC Quad at Tufts University.
