AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College volleyball team opened its season with a convincing 3-0 win over visiting non-league foe Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday night. Senior co-captain outside hitter Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) paced the Jeffs, who won by game scores of 30-17, 30-21 and 30-15, with a match-high 13 kills.
Amherst sophomore setter Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) was similarly impressive on offense with a match-high 27 assists. Fellow sophomore Nicole Davidson (Los Angeles, CA) added nine kills and a team-high 11 digs, while junior outside hitter Jess Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) chipped in with eight kills and eight digs. First-year middle hitter Sara Bruggeman (Boulder, CO) was outstanding in her collegiate debut, finishing with six kills and three service aces.
Sophomore middle hitters Steph Frase (Manchester, MD) and Beverly Guilbault (Deerfield, MA) paced Mount Holyoke with seven kills each, thanks in large part to a 20-assist evening by junior setter Becca Bailey. The Lyons fell to 1-3 with the loss.
Amherst returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m. against visiting non-league foe Smith College.
