Volleyball Outlasts Smith 3-2

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College volleyball team overcame a 25-kill, 18-dig performance by Smith College first-year Kate Sorensen (Kelso, WA) to outlast the visiting Pioneers 3-2 in a non-conference match on Thursday night. Sophomore setter Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) paced Amherst with 41 assists.

After dropping the opening game 27-30, Amherst rebounding to take the next two, 30-27 and 30-26. Smith evened the match with a 30-25 win in game four, setting the stage for a dramatic game five. Amherst jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the deciding game and held on for a 15-12 victory, improving to 2-0 on the season. First-year phenom Kate Raddock (Stamford, CT) carried the Jeffs with six kills in the final game and finished with nine overall.

Senior Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) and junior Jess Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) added 11 kills each for Amherst, while first-year Sara Bruggeman (Boulder, CO) chipped in with 10 kills, one block solo and a whopping 11 block assists.

Aside from Sorensen, sophomore Flannery Rogers (Woods Hole, MA) and senior Erin Carter (Durham, NH) had strong matches for Smith, posting 13 and 12 kills, respectively. The Pioneers fell to 2-1 with the loss.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting Western Connecticut State University.
