AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's outdoor track & field team earned a second place finish in Saturday's Spring Fling meet at Pratt Field.
Tufts University captured top honors in the six team field with 133 points, followed by Amherst with 99. The US Coast Guard Academy placed third with 55.5 points, Trinity College finished fourth with 52 points, Connecticut College logged 46 points and finished fifth, while Brandeis University added 8.5 points to round out the six team field.
Amherst got off to a fast start in the sprint events as Karen Blake '17 secured a pair of top finishes in the 200-meter dash (25.51) and the 400-meter run (1:01.45). The Jeffs placed four in the top 10 in the 200-meter dash as Victoria Hensley '16 (27.49) placed fourth, Sarah Whelan '17 (28.05) placed seventh and Gabby Bishop '18 finished ninth (28.17). The Purple & White also had five runners place in the top six in the 400-meter race as Hensley placed second (1:02.92), Whelan finished third (1:04.52), Danielle Griffin '18 tabbed fifth (1:05.44) and Itai Brand-Thomas '15 crossed in sixth with a time of 1:06.25.
Taylor Summers '16 and Bishop added fifth and eighth place marks in the 100-meter dash with respective times of 13.10 and 13.52; while Hannah Herrera '17 (2:22.73), Kelli Ellingson '15 (2:24.19), Keelin Moehl '16 (2:24.80) and Olivia Tarantino '15 (2:26.42) took home places 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the 800-meter run.
In the 5000-meter jaunt, Lexi Sinclair '15 won the event with a time of 17:49.14, followed by Lizzy Briskin '15 and Savanna Gornisiewicz '17 in second and third with times of 17:52.06 and 17:57.27. Jessie Kaliski '15 added a seventh place mark with a time of 19:21.54.
The 1500-meter race saw Sarah Foster '16 place fifth (5:01.73), Cat Lowdon '17 place seventh (5:05.28), Cara Lembo '17 finished ninth (5:06.00) and Tess Frenzel '17 crossed the line 10th with a time of 5:07.38.
Kiana Herold '17 garnered first place honors in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.00) and added a first place mark in the high jump (1.61 meters). Becki Golia '18 added a second place finish in the high jump (1.51 meters), while the Jeffs racked up second, third, fourth and sixth place honors in the long jump. Summers (4.94 meters) finished second, Griffin (4.71 meters) followed in third, Herold (4.61 meters) finished fourth, and Louise Atadja '16 (4.41 meters) placed sixth in the event.
Abbey Asare-Bediako '18 and Atadja finished fifth and sixth in the triple jump with respective marks of 9.80 meters and 9.45 meters.
The 4x400 relay squad of Ellingson, Herrera, Tarantino and Moehl powered to a time of 4:25.05 and finished second.
Amherst returns to action Saturday, April 11 at the UMass Invitational.
