SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Amherst College women's indoor track and field team excelled at the Springfield Invitational Saturday afternoon in the Springfield College Field House as the Jeffs finished second overall with 163 points.
Springfield, the host school, won the meet with 179 points followed by Amherst in second and Trinity (102) in third. Rounding out the top five were UMass Dartmouth (92) and Eastern Connecticut State (69), respectively. Stevens Institute (60) finished sixth and Wheaton (32) placed seventh.
The Jeffs swept the 800 meter run as Keelin Moehl '16 paced the field with a mark of 2:26.00. Leonie Rauls '18 and Hannah Herrera '17 finished second and third, respectively, with times of 2:27.65 and 2:27.91.
Olivia Tarantino '15 picked up a top-three finish in the 1,000 meter run. The senior finished second overall as she crossed the finish line in 3:10.77.
Amherst dominated the one mile run and took five of the top-six spots. Lexi Sinclair '16 led the way as she paced the 22-person field with a time of 5:11.56. Savanna Gornisiewicz '17 finished third overall with a time of 5:15.19, and Nicky Roberts '18 (5:15.43), Lizzy Briskin '15 (5:15.62) and Kelli Ellingson '15 (5:31.25) took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Purple & White claimed another win in distance events as Cat Lowdon '17 claimed the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:44.79. Cara Lembo '17 finished third in 10:59.60, ahead of teammates Tess Frenzel '17 and Jessie Kaliski '15. Frenzel finished fourth in 11:00.49 and Kaliski took fifth in 11:05.22.
In relay events, Amherst's 4x200 meter "A" team consisting of Itai Brand-Thomas '15, Molly Levy '15, Louise Atadja '16 and Karen Blake '17 placed second overall in the event with a time of 1:50.35, and the 4x400 meter "A" team of Victoria Hensley '16, Rauls, Moehl and Herrera finished third in 4:21.82. The Jeffs' 4x800 "A" squad highlighted the relay events, however, as Kelli Ellingson '15, Gornisiewicz, Briskin and Sinclair led Amherst to a win with a time of 10:02.50.
Becki Golia '18 gave the Jeffs their only win in field events as the first-year took home the high jump title with a mark of 1.53 meters. In addition to her second-place finish in the 600 meter, Griffin grabbed a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 4.91 meters.
Other top performances on the day included a win by Kiana Herold '17 in the indoor pentathlon with 3,130 points. She picked up two wins in the 800 meter pentathlon and the high jump pentathlon with marks of 2:81.11 and 1.69m, respectively. She also finished second in the 60 meter hurdle pentathlon with a mark of 9.87 seconds and second in the shot put pentathlon with a toss of 8.08 meters.
Amherst returns to the track Saturday, Feb. 7 and will head to Tufts University for the Tufts Stampede.
