NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Naomi Bates '14 took first place in the long jump on Saturday to lead the Amherst women's indoor track & field team in its 2013-14 season opener at the Winter Classic, hosted by Smith College.
Bates set a program record in the long jump, surpassing the mark she set a year ago with a distance of 5.60m. Also competing in the event and finishing in the top-10 were Kiana Herold '17 and Taylor Summers '16. Herold took seventh in her first collegiate meet with a distance of 4.97m while Summers finished eighth with a mark of 4.95m.
Herold had an impressive day in which she also finished second in the high jump with a leap of 1.57m. In other jumps, Louise Atadja '16 grabbed 10th in the triple jump with a mark of 9.63m.
Summers and Victoria Hensley '16 highlighted the day for the Jeffs in track events. Summers sprinted to a time of 8.14 seconds in the 60m dash to claim fourth overall while Hensley finished in 1:02.13 in the 400m dash to also finish fourth.
Rounding out the top performances for Amherst were Jaya Tripathi '14, Sarah Whelan '17, and the Jeffs 4x400 relay team. Tripathi took sixth in the 600m run in 1:47.25 and Whelan finished 10th in the 200m dash with a sprint of 28.42 seconds. The 4x400 relay team took third overall, placing in 4:15.91.
Amherst has a month-long break before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Wesleyan.
