WESTFIELD, Mass. – Two Jeffs broke three program records as the Amherst College women's outdoor track & field team placed 14th overall at the 39-team NEICAAA New England Outdoor Championship hosted by Westfield State University.
The meet featured Division I, II and III schools as the University of Rhode Island won with 77 points, edging Southern Connecticut State University by one (76). Rounding out the top five were UMass (61.50), Boston College (57) and Sacred Heart (50). Amherst finished 14th and third among DIII schools with 20.50 points.
Naomi Bates '14 continues to break program records during her impressive senior campaign in Purple & White. The Washington, D.C. native led the team with three top-10 finishes. In track events, she set two program records with a third place finish in the 200 meter dash and eighth place mark in the 100 meter. She crossed the finish line in the 200 in 24.03 seconds while becoming the first Jeff to break the 12 second mark in the 100, crossing in 11.93 seconds. Her time in the 200 is currently the fastest in Division III and the 100 meter time is fourth among DIII runners.
Bates highest finish of the day, however, occurred in the long jump in which she placed second with a mark of 5.69 meters.
In other field events, Kiana Herold '17 continues her stellar first-year with a program record leap in the high jump. Herold finished third overall with a jump of 1.70 meters, surpassing the 30-year record set in 1984 by Dana Woods '86 (1.65m). Herold's jump is tied for seventh highest in the country this outdoor season.
The women's 4x800 meter relay 'A' team also finished within the top-10 and claimed ninth overall with a time of 9:27.39 to round out the top performances on the day.
The Jeffs return to action beginning Thursday, May 15 for the two-day ECAC Championships at RPI.
