TROY, N.Y. – A pair of first-years highlighted the day for the Amherst College women's outdoor track and field team as the Jeffs finished 13th overall at the 2014 ECAC Division III Outdoor Championships, hosted by RPI.
The Jeffs won their first-ever ECAC Indoor Championships but recorded 20 points Friday to finish in a three-way tie with Misericordia and NESCAC rival Tufts for 13th. MIT won the meet with 56 points followed by Rowan (44) and Ithaca (40). Rounding out the top-five were St. Lawrence (35) and Ramapo (31).
Karen Blake '17 excelled in the 200 meter dash, crossing the finish line in second place with a time of 24.95 seconds. She was narrowly edged by Hulerie McGuffie of UMass Boston who won the event in 24.57.
Blake was also the anchor on the 4x100 meter relay team, consisting of Taylor Summers '16, Kiana Herold '17 and Naomi Bates '14. The quartet took third place with a time of 48.45 seconds.
Herold had another stellar leap in the high jump. After breaking the 10-year old outdoor Amherst record (1.70m) a week ago, the first-year fell shy of tying her personal best mark as she finished third overall with a jump of 1.69 meters.
Rounding out the top performances on the day for Amherst was Jessica Kaliski '15. The junior competed in the 10,000 meter run and placed 12th overall, crossing the finish line in 38:40.39.
The NCAA Division III Championships begin next weekend with a three-day event hosted by Ohio Wesleyan starting Thursday, May 22.
