MEDFORD, Mass. – Naomi Bates '14 won the 60 meters and Keri Lambert '13 triumphed in the 3k to lead a strong showing by the Amherst College women's indoor track and field team at the Tufts Last Chance Meet on Saturday.
With no team scores kept, numerous Jeffs lowered various event times in hopes of qualifying for the upcoming NCAA Championships. Bates started the meet off in fine form, posting Division III's 26th-fastest time of the year in the 60 as she crossed first in 7.87 seconds. Teammates Abbeh Shirley '15 (7.92) and Taylor Summers '16 (8.03) were close behind in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Later in the meet, Bates notched a second-place effort in the long jump as she reached 5.32 meters. Meanwhile, Shirley added a second top-five finish in the 200 meters as she placed fifth in 26.01 seconds.
Meanwhile, Lambert headlined the work of the Jeff distance runners as she pulled away from the field in the 3000 meters, winning in 9:53.90. While no national records are kept for the event, the senior's dominance was evident as she finished nearly 30 seconds ahead of second-place Becky Painter of Swarthmore (10:23.06). Teammate Lexi Sinclair '16 placed seventh in 10:55.52.
The Jeffs also enjoyed a strong showing in the 1000 meters, with Lauren Almeida '13 paced a trio of Amherst harriers, finishing second in 2:57.06 as she trailed on Williams' Brianne Mirecki (2:53.92). Anna Berglund '16 (3:09.18) and Olivia Tarantino (3:09.48) stuck together and placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Amy Dao '14 was the final Jeff to notch a top-10 finish at the meet as she placed 10th in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:21.89, just behind Tufts' Sydney Smith (2:21.81).
With qualifiers still to be finalized, the Jeffs' contingent will head to the NCAA National Championships next weekend, to be held at North Central College (IL) March 8-9.
