NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Naomi Bates '14 picked up wins in three events and tied a 35-year old schoold record in the long jump to lead the Amherst women's indoor track & field team to a strong showing at the Smith Invitational.
Placing first in the long jump (5.39m), Bates matched the Amherst standard set by Erica Nims-Clark in 1977. The junior also recorded a first-place finish in the 60-meter dash (8.03) before notching another victory in the 200-meter event (26.63). Abbeh Anderson '15 also impressed in the sprints, coming in third in both the 60m (8.21) and 200m (27.56).
First-year Victoria Hensley finished as the runner-up in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.20, followed closely by teammate Itai Brand-Thomas '15 in third (1:04.85). Teaming up with Jaya Tripathi '14 and Kathleen Hurt '15, Hensley and Brand-Thomas were also a part of the Jeffs' fifth-place 4x400m relay (4:28.91). Tripathi also logged the fourth-fastest time in the 800-meter run, clocking in at (2:36.06).
Jessica Mueller '13 enjoyed a solid day in the field events, placing fourth in the triple jump (10.23m) and high jump (1.47m), while registering a sixth-place finish in the long jump (4.89m).
Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Tufts Invitational.
