SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Naomi Bates '14 has been named the NESCAC women's Field Performer of the Week after a strong showing at the UMass Minuteman Invitational.
Besting a field of 44 Division I, II and III student-athletes in the long jump, Bates broke a school record with a winning mark of 5.84 meters. The effort surpassed Nicole Campbell's former Amherst standard set in 1999.
The third best Division III mark in the long jump this season, she also finished 10th in the 100-meter dash (12.81), helping Amherst to record an eighth-place showing amongst 19 programs. Katherine Finnegan '13 and Ashley Palmer '15 of UMass took second (5.78m) and third (5.64m), respectively, followed by Wesleyan's Alexis Walker '16 (5.58m) and Georgia Pingue '14 of Northeastern in the top-five.
One of the Jeffs' top sprinters, Bates has excelled in the field events this spring, placing third in the triple jump at Tufts' Snowflake Classic with a mark of 10.88m. The second Amherst student-athlete to be honored this season, she joined Keri Lambert '13, who earned Track Performer of the Week accolades on Apr. 1 after winning the 5,000-meter run (17:03.87) at Tufts.
The Lord Jeffs return to action on Saturday, Apr. 20 at the Little III Championships.
